Edith Makra, Director of Environmental Initiatives at the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, is a visionary leader in regional sustainability and climate action. With a natural gift for collaboration and convening, she has empowered stakeholders at every level—from grassroots activists to political leaders—to work together toward common environmental goals. Edith has developed and led impactful programs such as NeighborWoods for Openlands, Greenstreets for Mayor Richard M. Daley, and Community Trees initiatives for The Morton Arboretum and the city of Rockford, strengthening communities while promoting sustainable urban landscapes.

At the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, Edith spearheaded the creation of the Greenest Region Compact, the largest municipal sustainability collaborative in the United States, uniting 162 municipalities and five counties to advance clean energy, transportation electrification, and equitable climate planning. She co-authored the Climate Action Plan for the Chicago Region, one of the nation’s pioneering regional climate plans, incorporating science-based mitigation and adaptation goals anchored in equity. Edith has also led innovative programs such as the EV Readiness Program and solar development initiatives, helping Illinois communities achieve measurable environmental progress.
