Evanston has a longstanding commitment to sustainability, climate action, and livability. In 2018, the Evanston City Council formally adopted the Climate Action and Resilience Plan (CARP), which, among other things, establishes a community carbon neutrality goal, a zero-waste goal, and a 100% renewable electricity goal. In January 2026, the City completed the Environmental Equity Investigation to evaluate how historic injustices and city policies have shaped the lived experiences of community members. The investigation identified environmental inequities, where they stemmed from, and how to chart a new path toward a more equitable and just future for all community members.
